In earlier chapters there are stories about times we spent on vacation with family and friends. As far as the places we visited on business trips or for short vacations or family visits where we stayed as guests in people’s homes, or in hotels, I don’t think we need to include those in this book about houses we have lived in. But there are some places we stayed for a longer period, or we returned to several times or many times over the years, or where the place itself is just very important in our family stories. This list is not in chronological order but just based on what I remember.
Virchuclo: The Heimsath Ranch near the town of Medina, in Bandera County, Texas. The ranch was about a five hour drive from our home in Houston, too far to be a weekend place. Looking for something closer, we found Warrenton, and then Fayetteville.
Johnson City: While doing research for Pioneer Texas Buildings, we found ourselves at the Johnson Ranch waiting out a heavy thunderstorm, that made travel too dangerous due to risk of flash floods.
Galveston: When my parents drove from New York to Houston to visit us, we brought them to Galveston, where we had been spending weekends. Their rented beach cottage survived a hurricane. After that we decided to spend weekends in the country instead of at the beach.
Mexico: Acapulco, where Clovis and I spent our honeymoon
Mexico: San Miguel de Allende, where we studied Spanish at the Bellas Artes while living with a local Mexican family, and where we returned to visit with Catherine and Peter.
Mexico: San Patricio Melaque, where we stayed at the Hotel de Legazpi in the front second-floor room with a balcony.
New Mexico: The National Park, where we camped with the Salman family in the mountains
New Mexico: Santa Fe, where we visited our friend Forest Moses on Canyon Road, and where we shared an evening meal with a group of young people living in a commune
Colorado: Where we went to another National Park campground with our family, and had to evacuate because of mudslides. A very memorable experience.
Arizona: Where we camped with our friends the Keilers in Grand Canyon National Park.
